Pacaldi explains everything.
Matt had to have chemotherapy after reading the script.

The Time of the Doctor was the traditional clusterfuck of a finale for the Eleventh Doctor.

Moot Smoth's last episode saw the first appearance of Piano Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor (other than his deathstare cameo in The Day of the Doctor). It also features Jenna Coleman as Pancakes plus several enemies of the Doctor, including the CybermenSilenceDaleks and Weeping Angels.

This episode was notable for confusing the fuck out of family members who are less into the show than you are.

The Time of the Doctor attempts to tie up several billion plot threads developed over the course of Eleven's tenure including the prophecy of the Silence, the cracks in the universe, the "Doctor Who?" question, the Time Lords and the Doctor's fate on the planet Trenzalore while also dealing with the regeneration limit established in The Deadly Assassin. In addition Moffat realized the ending of Asylum of the Daleks was an awful decision, so the Daleks regain their memoirs of the Doctor. Plus all of this is set against the backdrop of The Siege of Trenzalore.

But mostly nude Matt.

This episode introduces us to the greatest companion ever, Handles, (a modified Cyberman head the Doctor uses as his personal sex toy) and Barnable (a local boy the Doctor also uses as his personal sex toy).

Oh and that Tasha Lem chick. And probably some other shit I'm forgetting, there was a lot packed into this episode.

It really is nowhere near as bad as people on /who/ make it out to be, as is the case with most episodes. Lots of wasted potential, sure, but it turned out to be an okay episode. Not 10/10 GOAT but not 1/10 Off the Moff-tier.

Beware the sloppy writing of a montage to literally TELL us about all the years going by as the Doctor fights everyone.
