Doctor Who Magazine

Doctor Who Magazine is a long-running Doctor Who tie-in magazine started by Marvel UK. It began in 1979 as Doctor Who Weekly and changed titles a few times before settling on DWM in the mid-80's.

It is currently recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's longest running TV tie-in magazine. Holy fucking shit.

Publishes Doctor Who comics. It's also a pretty good source of interviews, news and reviews.

As one DWM editor said, it was important in "just maintaining a presence" during The Wilderness Years. Plus it continued the Doctor's adventures in comics.

/who/ gets a question answered

/who/tube actually managed to get a question in February 2017's edition under the name Frank Offerino.

The Good Times Are Over

In the last few years the BBC have been getting tired that the magazine isn't kissing and worshipping the ground the show stands on (enough) by way of their show reviews actually criticizing and critiquing the show across all eras (including new episodes). Despite RTD trying to help out and protect them (at one pointing offering their comic strip as the source of the official Eight/Nine regeneration. True story), their luck seems to be running out given these indicators:

  • Thinning of page count.
  • Not giving Class a cover-page article
  • Letting actors get openly political in interviews (see the "big" Peter Davison one).
  • "The Watcher of the Wotcha! articles being fired for hiding the message "BBC WORLDWIDE AND PANNI ARE CUNTS" in his last paper, exposing him as veteran BTS guy Nicolas Pegg in the process, and alledgely getting the whole magazine staff forced into an "ethics" retraining course or whatever.
  • Hiring the chick from the Fan Show to start writing cosplay articles, seemingly trying to cater specifically to the Tumblr audience who does that shit a lot.
  • Hiring a new "Time Team" (the panel that rewatches the series chronologically as if they never saw it before) without informing the previous members.
  • Probably some other stuff too.

There were plenty before Gary, but here's from the 90's onwards.
